The project was based around Wasdale (the photo above shows the Packhorse Bridge at Wasdale Head) and the sheep which live there. They have shaped the landscape through grazing, and roam freely throughout the valley.
These are Herdwick's - a Fell breed - who live out on the hills all year round. They are "hefted" which means that they roam a certain fixed area, and this knowledge is passed down the generations so each flock has a home range which they don't leave. Herdwicks are also unusual in that they are born as black lambs, then their fleece lightens over time, so the older the sheep, the whiter the fleece. These are quite young - last years lambs.
