Ready-Mades Project : The Lake District's Rubbish These Days
These pieces were developed as a response to the growing amount of litter which is being left in the Lake District and surrounding areas by locals and visitors alike. While people visit the area for the picture postcard scenery, they often leave behind a semi-permanent trace of their presence in the form of plastic and other wastes, and I wanted to highlight the problem, and hopefully encourage people to bring their rubbish home with them.
The first piece was a sculpture in the shape of a cairn, covered with found litter from our walks in the Western Lakes. This was then photographed in various locations with the plan to use these images as part of a publicity campaign raising awareness of the problem. I also photographed some of the found objects in their original location, with the scenic views more usually associated with the area as a background. These were printed as postcards, to heighten the contrast between the ideal and the reality of the current situation.
