I experimented with small sculptures of dancers. These were made from wire and papier mache, and I was looking at them as being the maquette for a large bronze sculpture, even though this would not have been practical in the time available.
I then took a series of photographs of water in motion - at the beach at Allonby and rapids on a local river - and decided that my final piece was going to be an attempt to capture the movement of water. One of these experiments was the painted silk above, which was painted onto wet silk, salt added to create a pooling effect, and then rough gathers used to create an illusion of deeper waves and ripples.
